Rating: 1.6/5 (5x)

Mar 1, 2010 --- Anyone who is qualified to act as Pilot in Command of the aircraft you are flying can act as a safety pilot. An example of how it could benefit you while working towards an instrument rating follows;
You rent a Piper Warrior and take another licensed Private Pilot with you. During the flight you put on a view limiting device and practice instrument maneuvers in VFR conditions. You may log that time spent under the hood as PIC and as simulated instrument time. Your friend in the other seat may also log that time you are under the hood as PIC time. Be sure to log the flight appropriately ( FAR 61.51 (g))
Of the 40 hours of instrument time required towards the instrument rating only 15 must be with an authorized instructor (FAR 61.65 (d)(2)(i)). The remaining time can be logged with an instructor who does not hold an instrument instructor rating or with a qualified safety pilot.

Anyone looking to find someone to be a safety pilot can go to the Message Center on the MyFBO scheduling website and post their info on the bulletin board.
