Nov 1, 2009 --- This question is difficult to answer because so many variables go into it. The FAA says that you need to log at least 40 hours of flight time to apply for a pilot's license. Very few people actually finish their training in the minimum number of hours. The national average is closer to 62 hours. Another factor that affects the cost is the type of aircraft you learn to fly in. A Cessna 152 or a Flight Design CTSW's rental rates are less than a Piper Warrior.

In addition to the cost of the airplane and instructor you should plan to spend approximately $200 for books and materials and an FAA medical exam will set you back around $100. The FAA written knowledge test is $90 ($80 if you're an AOPA member). The rate for the Designated Examiner that will give you the final exam for your license is $350.

In all you should budget $7,500 to $9,000 to complete your Private Pilot training. SLM Financial is an excellent resource for flight training financing.
